A gear pump is one of the most common types of pumps used for applications of hydraulic fluid power. A gear pump operates by using the meshing of gears in order to pump fluid by displacement. These devices are commonly utilized in chemical installations to be able to pump fluid with specific viscosity. Two main types of gear pumps exist. Internal gear pumps utilize an external and an internal spur gear and external gear pumps utilize two external spur gears. Gear pumps pump a constant amount of fluid for each revolution. This defines them as fixed or positive displacement. Some gear pump machines are designed to function as either a motor or a pump.
While the gears turn on the pump, this action functions to separate the pump's intake side, creating a void and a suction that is filled by fluid. This fluid is passed by the gears to the discharge side, where the fluid is displaced by the meshing of the gears. There are tight and very small mechanical clearances, that along with the speed of revolution effectively avoid the fluid from leaking backwards. The rigid design of the houses and gears gives the pump its ability to be able to pump highly viscous liquids and allow for excessively high pressures.
Lift trucks as well as other forklifts may have specific labels used in certain hazardous locations. The mark denotes that this particular model of lift truck meets the minimum standards of ANSI/UL 553 intended for electric forklifts or ANSI/UL 558 meant for internal combustion engine lift trucks.
The use for labels intended for lift forklifts can be found in National Fire Protection Association NFPA 505 - Powered Industrial forklifts including: Areas or Use, Maintenance and Operation, and Type Designations. Check with your local insurance provider and Fire Marshall for more information about the permitted uses of industrial powered trucks in your application.
If the forklift has been proven to meet the outlined criteria, the following labels could be placed. A marked truck would have the type description put on the forklift nameplate and would have one of the following labels attached.
